Corinne H. Smith: Travels with Thoreau

Read my blogs on recreating some legs of Thoreau’s travels.

American author and naturalist Henry David Thoreau traveled farther away from Concord and more often than most of us realize.

Yes, he loved his hometown and he knew practically every inch of it. But he also went farther afield on more than 150 occasions: to Cambridge and Boston to use the libraries; to various points in New England to lecture or to conduct property surveys; and to many places merely to enjoy personal explorations or to visit with friends. He was most certainly not a hermit. Travels With Thoreau is devoted to Henry, to the places he visited, and to the ways we can follow his paths today.

In the third paragraph of Walden, Henry Thoreau admitted, "I have traveled a good deal in Concord," his hometown in Massachusetts. Here he was being truthful and yet modest. Yes, he had walked in just about every space in the 25 square mile town. He also frequented the towns surrounding Concord - Acton, Carlisle, Bedford, Lincoln, Sudbury, and Assabet Village [now present-day Maynard] - either as he ran errands, conducted property surveys, gave lectures, or sauntered or paddled for personal exploration.

But his excursions took him farther away from Concord and even from those towns on more than 150 occasions. In this area of the site, we'll explore some of the same places that Thoreau did, as he walked, paddled, or rode into other parts of New England and beyond.
